[Editor\u2019s note: The Ukrainian Jewish Encounter was founded in 2008 with the goal of building stronger relations between Ukrainians and Jews, two peoples who for centuries lived side by side on the territory of what is modern-day Ukraine. Since then, in keeping with its motto \u201cOur stories are incomplete without each other,\u201d UJE has sponsored translations and publication of works the organization anticipates will promote a deeper understanding between the two peoples and an appreciation of their respective cultures.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over the next two weeks we are featuring books that have appeared in the <\/em>Library of Holocaust Memoirs series that were published by the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies with UJE\u2019s support. <\/em>In all instances, the views expressed in these publications are those of the authors and editors and do not necessarily reflect the views of UJE.]<\/em><\/p>\n

The Daughter We Had Always Wanted: The Story of Marta<\/em><\/h2>\n

The Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies is pleased to announce the latest publication in its Library of Holocaust Memoirs series.\u00a0The Daughter We Had Always Wanted: The Story of Marta <\/em>is the Center\u2019s first publication, adapted for readers aged ten and up. The original book was published by Yad Vashem, and the Ukrainian version appeared on the initiative of the civic organization Helsinki Initiative-XXI, a group of activists from Chortkiv, where the main character was born. Thanks to Tyhran Sohoian, this story speaks to us not only through the text and family photos but also through his wonderful illustrations.<\/p>\n

The Daughter We Had Always Wanted: The Story of Marta <\/em>is the story of a Jewish child who held onto life despite horrible losses, and eventually found herself in the State of Israel.<\/p>\n
