Ivan Franko (1856-1916) is considered one of the founding fathers of modern Ukrainian literature. Yet his attitude towards Jews was often ambivalent in his literary and journalistic works.<\/p>\n

The panel discussion \u201cUkrainians and Jews in the World of Ivan Franko\u201d to be held at the upcoming 27 Lviv International BookForum will look at a wide spectrum of Franko\u2019s beliefs. The panel discussion includes Yaroslav Hrytsak, Professor, Ukrainian Catholic University (Lviv, Ukraine); Wolf Moskovich, Professor Emeritus, Hebrew University (Jerusalem, Israel); Serhii Plokhy, Professor, Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts).<\/p>\n

The conversation is based on the recently published English-translation of Professor Hrytsak\u2019s book Ivan Franko and His Community<\/em>, which is available from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies Press<\/a> and the essay \u201cTwo Views on the Problems of Ukrainian-Jewish Relations. Ivan Franko and Vladimir (Zeev) Jabotinsky\u201d which appeared in the book \u201cIvan Franko und die j\u00fcdische Frage in Galizien\u201d (\u201cIvan Franko and the Jewish Question in Galicia\u201d).\u00a0 The essay is available here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Professors Moskovich and Plokhy are board members of the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter.\u00a0 Professor Hrytsak is a member of the organization\u2019s Academic Council.<\/p>\n
