The Ukrainian-Jewish relationship cannot be defined solely by the painful chapters of history that were devastating for Jews. These must not be forgotten. However, the remarkable cultural, religious, and literary legacy created by the mutually enriching encounter of these two peoples throughout their millennia of co-existence remains largely unknown, and often overlooked. In exploring this complex relationship, Ukrainians and Jews can learn as much about themselves as about each other.

Magocsi expanded on these ideas, and others, in the final leg of his Ukrainian tour, which took place this fall in the charming and historic cities of Chernivtsi, Kamyanets-Podilsky and Uzhhorod. In each of these locales, nationally known and local scholars, historians and activists joined him in discussing both the book and issues related to the Ukrainian-Jewish dialogue. Videos of those presentations are below.

Jews and Ukrainians: A Millennium of Co-Existence was made possible through the support of the Government of Canada and the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter. The book is published by The University of Toronto Press.

Chernivtsi, September 7, 2017
(in Ukrainian)

00:00-04:12
Hanna Skoreiko, Department of the History of Ukraine, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

04:13-15:00
Paul Robert Magocsi, Chair of Ukrainian Studies, University of Toronto

15:00-16:52
Oleksandr Dobrzhanskiy, Department of History, Politics and International Affairs, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

16:53-22.12
Josef Zissels, Head, Association of Jewish Organizations and Communities of Ukraine

22:13-25:52
Ilya Hots, Director, Chernivtsi Oblast Charitable Organization “Hesed Shushana”

25:53-29:42
Iryna Yaworska, writer, author of the monograph “Life as a Search for Paradise: The Emigration of Jews from Chernitvsi Oblast (1944-1991)”

29:46-32:45
Oleksandr Filipchuk, Department of the History of Ukraine, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

32:46-37:35
Nazariy Chrystan, Student, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

37:36-39:22
Oleksandr Bezarov, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

39:23-41:08
Mykola Kushnir, Director, Chernivtsi Museum of the History and Culture of Bukovynian Jews

41:09-44:14
Vasyl Botushandsky, Department of the History of Ukraine, Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University

44:45-50:44
Additional Commentary

50:45-53:13
Vladyslav Hrynevych, Jr., Regional Manager, Ukrainian Jewish Encounter

Kamyanets-Podilsky, September 6, 2017
(in Ukrainian)

00:00-03:02
Volodymyr Dubinsky, Dean, History Department, Kamyanets-Podilsky Ivan Ohienko National University

03:03-06:33
Anatoliy Filiniuk, Director, Department of the History of Ukraine, Kamyanets-Podilsky Ivan Ohienko National University

06:34-14:39
Vadym Stetsiuk, Lecturer, Department of the History of Ukraine, Kamyanets-Podilsky Ivan Ohienko National University

14:40-17:36
Natalia A.
