Over the course of 2017, Paul Robert Magocsi, Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, traveled the breadth of Ukraine to discuss Jews and Ukrainians: A Millennium of Co-Existence<\/em>, the award-winning book he co-authored with Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern, Crown Family Professor of Jewish Studies at Northwestern University.<\/p>\n

Several important points emerged in the lively discussions held throughout the book tour. The Ukrainian-Jewish relationship cannot be defined solely by the painful chapters of history that were devastating for Jews. These must not be forgotten. However, the remarkable cultural, religious, and literary legacy created by the mutually enriching encounter of these two peoples throughout their millennia of co-existence remains largely unknown, and often overlooked. In exploring this complex relationship, Ukrainians and Jews can learn as much about themselves as about each other.<\/p>\n

Magocsi expanded on these ideas, and others, in the final leg of his Ukrainian tour, which took place this fall in the charming and historic cities of Chernivtsi, Kamyanets-Podilsky and Uzhhorod. \u00a0In each of these locales, nationally known and local scholars, historians and activists joined him in discussing both the book and issues related to the Ukrainian-Jewish dialogue.\u00a0 Videos of those presentations are below.<\/p>\n
