They are present in his latest best-selling collection of essays <a href=\"http:\/\/umka.com\/eng\/catalogue\/books-belles-lettres\/andriy-lyubka-saudade.html\">Saudade<\/a>, which takes its name from the Portuguese and means, in essence, the presence of absence. They are present in his novel <a href=\"http:\/\/umka.com\/eng\/catalogue\/books-belles-lettres\/andriy-lyubka-karbid-carbide.html\">Carbide,<\/a> a magical and sometime surreal tome that was shortlisted this year for the prestigious <a href=\"http:\/\/angelus.com.pl\/english\/about-the-award\/\">Angelus<\/a> Central European Literature Award.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uk.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%D0%9B%D1%8E%D0%B1%D0%BA%D0%B0_%D0%90%D0%BD%D0%B4%D1%80%D1%96%D0%B9_%D0%A1%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BF%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87\">Lyubka<\/a>, one of Ukraine\u2019s most prominent writers, was raised at the footprints of two borders, at the very edge of Ukraine, in a place where Slovakia and Hungary are so close they can seemingly be touched.\u00a0 Where the ambiance <em>is<\/em> otherworldly.<\/p>\n<p>Lyubka was on the cusp of turning thirty when he traveled to the United States and Canada in late October and early November 2017. On November 3 and 7, respectively, he appeared in Toronto at St. Vladimir Institute and at the Munk School for International Affairs, University of Toronto. In his conversations with Professor Maxim Tarnawsky of the university\u2019s Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Lyubka talks about his life, art, and the presence of those absent borders.<\/p>\n<p>With his permission, we present two essays from <a href=\"http:\/\/umka.com\/eng\/catalogue\/books-belles-lettres\/andriy-lyubka-saudade.html\">Saudade<\/a> that Lyubka read during his presentations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>from<\/em> <span style=\"color: #0861a6;\"><strong>Cholvent<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWithout them we are all a bit like orphans; that is precisely what this recipe teaches us. Because if you remove meat, beans, or pearl barley from chovlent, the dish will not come out right. For harmony, all the ingredients are necessary. That is why without the Jews our landscapes, cities, and traditions look more solitary, poorer. Well, it seems to be all here\u2014Koloyeva Street, the spring from which imbibed the Polish king Jan Sobieski, the hotel where the writer stayed, and the sites of the former Great Synagogue and the Beth Midrash <\/em><em>(<\/em><em>today, they host the market stalls and shops)<\/em><em>. <\/em><em>There is the Jewish kirkut, the burial place called okopysko by the locals.
