Folkways and Fantasies of Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern — exhibition of paintings
Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern will present his artistic works at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York City. Driving his inspiration from ideas and imagery of Judaism and Hasidic folklore, Ukrainian native art, Flemish genre paintings, Russian icons, Japanese wood engravings, as well as Russian and Jewish early 20th century avant-garde, Petrovsky-Shtern chronicles and illustrates complex embodiments of real human celebration, drama, tragedy, and survival. An opening reception together with a presentation by the artist will be held on Saturday, February 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Born in Kyiv, Petrovsky-Shtern is the Crown Family Professor of Jewish Studies at Northwestern University.
