Israeli Writer’s Play Staged in Dnipropetrovsk

The Little Stage Youth Theatre in Dnipropetrovsk (directed by Medina Dolgov) staged the one-act play Children of the Golem, an adaptation of the work by the Israeli writer Victoria Orti (Beer-Sheva). The premiere took place December 18th.

Victoria OrtiIn an exclusive comment for UJE, Orti remarked, “I am glad that the production happened at this place and at this time. Why? Because the content of the play is especially relevant there. I do not cling to any political position regarding the current military nightmare. However in a general human sense I cannot remain indifferent to what is happening now in the east of Ukraine. The theme of the play is the eternal opposition between the divine order and the principle that is embodied by the Golem, which is expressed in fascism, communism, and other '-isms'...As for the Jews, they play the role of a litmus test in this war.”

Audience response to the play has been extremely enthusiastic, as reflected by comments posted on social media. Orti noted on her Facebook page, “Yesterday on Radio Liberty there was a story on the Children of the Golem. What I appreciated most of all was the phrase, ‘Ukrainians in the audience felt Jewish.’ It was worth being born the daughter of a Ukrainian and a Jew to evaluate the profound effect of this event in my life.”
