Magocsi speaks in Naples at the Stati Generali dell’Ucrainistica Italiana conference
Paul Robert Magocsi, Board Member of the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter and Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto, appeared at the Stati Generali dell’Ucrainistica Italiana conference that took place on 30 May-1 June in Naples, Italy.
Speaking to an audience comprised of leading Italian scholars and students dedicated to the study of Ukraine, Magocsi talked about two books supported by UJE: Jews and Ukrainians: A Millennium of Co-Existence (2016, 1st ed.; 2018, 2nd ed.) and Babyn Yar: History and Memory (2024), both distributed by the University of Toronto Press. Additionally, he presented for the first time the Italian-language version of Ukraina Redux: On Statehood and National Identity. The volume has appeared in five languages on the UJE website; the Italian-language digital version known as L’Ucraina Ritrovata: Sullo Stato e L’Identia A Nazionale will appear in this space in the fall.
Held at the University of Naples L’Orientale’s famed Palazzo Du Mesnil conference hall, the discussion was moderated by Simone A. Bellezza, Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Eastern Piedmont "Amedeo Avogadro", who was also one of the conference organizers. The talk touched upon numerous topics, which included the genesis of each publication, challenges faced by Ukrainianists in Italy in fighting pervasive Russian propaganda and lessons that could be learned from the Ukrainian diaspora in North America.
