Babyn Yar: Listening to the Past

Babyn Yar, a ravine in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, was the site of massacres carried out by Nazi Germany's forces during its campaign against the Soviet Union in World War II. On 29–30 September 1941 alone, some 33,771 Jews were killed. Other victims of massacres at the site included Soviet prisoners of war, communists and Romani people. An expert panel gathers to remember the tragedy and honour its victims.

8 October 2023 (Sunday), 15:00–16:30 EEST

Presentation of the thematic issue No. 34 of the magazine "Ukraine Modern" "The Holocaust in Ukraine: how the history of the crime is (not) written."

The idea for this issue of "Modern Ukraine" arose before the start of Russia's large-scale war against Ukraine, but the issue itself was released after its first year. Most of the texts were also written before 24 February 2022. During this time, after the tragedies of Bucha and Nova Kakhovka, the study of genocides in Ukraine ceased to be a purely academic concept. Accordingly, the history of the Holocaust on Ukrainian lands takes on a new tone. The study of the Holocaust provides the key to a better understanding of what is being done or may happen to us. This is especially important in the case of Ukraine, which occupies an important place in the history of the Holocaust and in which genocide has returned with modern warfare. During the presentation of the issue, there will be a discussion about the current historiographical trends in the field of Holocaust studies in Ukraine and the modern policy of commemorating its victims.

Participants:
Dr. Petro Dolhanov, editor of the section "Overcoming the Past" on the website of the international intellectual journal Ukraina Moderna;

Dr. Igor Shchupak, Director of the Tkuma Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies; Member of the International Council of Auschwitz (Poland); Board Member, Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (Dnipro, Ukraine);

Dr. Yehor Vradiy, Assistant Director of the Tkuma Ukrainian Institute for the Study of the Holocaust and of the Museum of Jewish Memory and the Holocaust (Dnipro, Ukraine).
