"A Journey through the Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter: From Antiquity to 1914"

Event date:
September 1, 2015 to September 11, 2015

The territory of modern-day Ukraine has been for many centuries the homeland of diverse and flourishing cultures, including one of the oldest and most populous Jewish communities in Europe. This exhibition explores the 2,000-year presence of Jews on Ukrainian lands alongside the historical experience of Ukrainians, through long periods of co-existence, interaction, and multi-faceted cultural cross-fertilization. The exhibition includes segments on the origins and remarkable growth of Hasidism on the territory of Ukraine, the challenging transformations experienced by these two stateless peoples in the course of the "long nineteenth century" in the Russian Empire and under Austrian Habsburg rule, and the migration of large numbers of both Jews and Ukrainians to North America, Canada in particular, beginning in the 1880s–90s.
