I am an academic at a Kharkiv university, an officer in the reserves and a historian of the Holocaust. And facing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Putin's attack on my home, I’m learning what patriotism really means.
But the phone call had different tidings: Russia had invaded. Putin had started a war.
