Hebrew Classes Established for Jewish Refugees
The Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) has established Ulpan classes in Dnipropetrovsk for the intensive study of the Hebrew language. Ulpan is intended for refugees from East Ukraine, and functions within the center of temporary residence for potential repatriates to Israel that was created by the JAFI with support of the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community.
Currently a hundred people are waiting to obtain an international passport, a consular check, or a departure to Israel. Groups are engaged 4 hours per week. Ulpan operates with the support of the Hamburg fund "Ebenezer" (Christian Supporters of Israel).
Ulpan teacher Alexander Ivashchenko noted that some of the pupils studied in JAFI groups in Donetsk several months ago. In addition to Hebrew they are studying Israeli culture, Jewish consciousness, and the realities of Israeli society. The student groups are constantly changing as those who receive permission for repatriation are immediately sent by the JAFI to Israel.
The Jewish Agency weekly evacuates from Eastern Ukrainian hot spots dozens of Jews wishing to be repatriated to Israel.
