Sharansky visits Jewish refugee camp
In Dnipropetrovsk, refugees from battle zones in eastern Ukraine told Chairman of the Executive of the Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky harrowing stories of hiding from gunfire, sitting in cellars without food or drink, and experiencing constant fear for one’s life.
Dozens of Jewish refugee families have taken refuge in the Mayak center, built by the Jewish Agency, and await their departure from eastern Ukraine. Until they board their Aliyah flight home, The Jewish Agency provides all necessities, including facilitating their escape from dangerous areas and providing shelter, food, and Hebrew classes as they prepare for life in Israel.
“A crisis always forces a person to make a choice," said Sharansky. "Often, that choice is not simple, and demands major life changes. As ever, it is important to remind Jews worldwide that Israel is always waiting for them, and that The Jewish Agency in conjunction with the Israeli government will do everything possible in order to ease the burdens of change and help with essential decision-making. This year, like never before, the blessing of Shana Tova and the hope to see each other next year in Jerusalem rings true for Jews worldwide.”
