Paul Robert Magocsi, Chair of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Toronto and UJE Board Member, and Peter Johnsson, renowned Swedish journalist and historian who has written several books on Poland and Ukraine, discussed the recently published book Babyn Yar: History and Memory at Lund University on 22 October 2024. Introduced by Barbara Törnquist-Plewa, professor of Central and Eastern European Studies and director of the university's Centre for European Studies, the discussion touched on a wide array of subjects, which included the memorialization of Babyn Yar.

The event brought together scholars interested in Ukraine and Central and Eastern Europe at one of Sweden's oldest and most prominent universities. A video of the discussion is below.

The 'Encounter' prize aims to build on the common experiences of Ukrainians and Jews over the centuries, expressed in literature and nonfiction. The Prize will be awarded annually to the most influential work in literature and nonfiction (in alternate years) that fosters Ukrainian-Jewish understanding, helping solidify Ukraine's place as a multi-ethnic society and giving truth to the motto, "Our stories are incomplete without each other."
