Winners of the All-Ukrainian Children's Drawing Competition announced — "Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter: A Look into the Future, 2023" and the opening of the exhibition of drawings

An esteemed panel of jurors has announced the winners of the All-Ukrainian Children's Drawing Competition, "Ukrainian-Jewish Encounter: A Look into the Future, 2023":

1st Place

Peace Awaits Us, by Kateryna Mokhnar, village of Velyky Omelianyk, Lutsk raion, Volyn oblast.

2nd Place

Shoulder to Shoulder, by Varvara Medonchak, city of Poltava.

3rd Place

White Birds of Hope, by Maria Lazarchuk, city of Zhytomyr.

We congratulate the winners and thank all the participants for their talented drawings, which are brimming with love for Ukraine and dreams of our country's bright and happy future, and for the creative thinking that was needed to address the theme of the competition!

The awards ceremony and the opening of an exhibition of drawings done by the competition participants will take place on 3 February 2024 at 14:30 at the Sholem Aleichem Museum in Kyiv (5A vul. Velyka Vasylkivska). The exhibit ends on 25 February 2024.

The drawing competition is held every year in Ukraine and is open to pupils and students of public and specialized schools, high schools, and lyceums. Its aim is to deepen young people's understanding of the breadth, complexity, and diversity of Ukrainian-Jewish relations over the centuries, with a perspective for the future, to gain a better idea of our shared historical experience, and to instill tolerance and awareness of interethnic relations in young Ukrainians.

Ukrainians and Jews have lived as neighbours for centuries, creating and sharing enduring cultures that continue to inform their identities today. Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (UJE) is proud to present Part 1 of an integrated narrative of these two peoples in the belief that there is much to be gained by viewing their historical experience together, in all its complexity.

As Ukraine defends its very existence against Russia, the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter Timeline serves to counter the malicious and false narratives about Ukraine and its history. The Timeline demonstrates that Ukraine is home to diverse peoples and, for centuries, one of the world’s oldest and largest Jewish communities.

 

Encounter: The Ukrainian-Jewish Literary Prize  

The 'Encounter' prize aims to build on the common experiences of Ukrainians and Jews over the centuries, expressed in literature and nonfiction. The Prize will be awarded annually to the most influential work in literature and nonfiction (in alternate years) that fosters Ukrainian-Jewish understanding, helping solidify Ukraine's place as a multi-ethnic society and giving truth to the motto, "Our stories are incomplete without each other."
