Video: "Encounter: The Ukrainian-Jewish Literary Prize" and other recent developments in Ukrainian literature

The Ukrainian Studies Program at Columbia University’s Harriman Institute and the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter (UJE) hosted an online conversation with renowned Ukrainian writers Vasyl Makhno and Andrei Kurkov on 14 October 2021. The discussion focused on the new literary award “Encounter: The Ukrainian-Jewish Literary Prize™”, sponsored by the Ukrainian Jewish Encounter with the support of the NGO Publishers Forum (Lviv, Ukraine), and other noteworthy developments in contemporary Ukrainian literature.

The event included a reading in Ukrainian with an English-language translation of an excerpt from Makhno’s novel Vichnyi Kalendar (The Eternal Calendar, 2019), the first winner of the “Encounter” prize. Kurkov headed the prize’s international jury in its inaugural year.

Dr. Mark Andryczyk of Columbia University moderated the discussion, which included remarks from Natalia A. Feduschak, UJE’s communications director.
